A CHARITY which provides dogs for deaf people is opening a temporary fundraising shop in the Lothians.
The charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is setting up shop in the East Lothian Voluntary Organisation Network premises on Tranent High Street for a week in the hope of raising money to train dogs to help the deaf and hard of hearing across Scotland.
There is only one other Hearing Dogs charity shop in the UK, on Portobello High Street.
With the slogan "Pile it high, sell it low", the shop brings in valuable funds, and charity organisers hope for similar success for the Tranent shop when it opens on January 30 for a week.
Every £200 raised pays for the veterinary care of one hearing dog, and £1000 can sponsor a kennel for a year.
The charity has more than 1170 dogs of all shapes and sizes across the UK that act as the "ears" for the hard of hearing, helping with everyday chores.
They can alert their owners to sounds we take for granted, and make them feel safer and more independent.
The four-legged friends, many of which are selected from rescue centres or donated as unwanted pets, are invaluable to members of the Hearing Dogs charity for both confidence and companionship.
As the demand for hearing dogs rises, the charity hopes its new charity shop venture will prove a success.
