Hello,
I'm hard of hearing. Completely deaf but use a cochlear implant. It does not help much because it's old and degrading... My hearing is declining.

Anyway, onto my question, I'm thinking of becoming a plumber and carpenter. I realize it will take many years. My first objective, though, is to be a plumber. I'm in the process of figuring out how to make that happen. I do have concerns though.

How important is hearing in the field of plumbing and are there ways around it (accommodations)? What types of accommodations would you consider reasonable to request as a plumber? What types of equipment would you recommend I use in situations where hearing is usually required? (For example, Vivax Metrotech has digital leak locators.)

Are walkie-talkies the main method of communication? (I see a lot of those around here in trade jobs, so I am curious.) Also, is 'Captel' available for use on cell-phones?

Sorry, those are a lot of questions but I have not had any luck getting my questions answered by professional plumbers around here (none that I've talked to have any experience with hard-of-hearing individuals in the trade).
