The Hands in Praise team, from the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf, located at Mandeville, Jamaica, visited the Cayman Islands for just over a week recently. They toured all three Islands, giving praise concerts in sign language, instead of singing.

The group is usually invited here once a year by the Cayman based group, Friends of the Deaf.

This year, however, the Department of Children and Family Services contacted Friends of the Deaf, to see if they could invite the Hands in Praise team over for Child Month.

Judy McTaggart, one of the founding members of Friends of the Deaf, said:

“Department of Children and Family Services asked us to invite the group here as part of Child Month activities. They paid for their airfare, and accommodation, so that this has really been done with their assistance.”

Damian Campbell is one of the Hands in Praise team leaders. He is deaf, and also attended the Caribbean Centre for the Deaf before graduating from bible college, and coming back to serve the Centre as its pastor.

The other team leader is Lorraine Mitchell, who is a teacher with the centre, and an expert in sign language.

During their 10-day stay here, the team visited many different schools, including George Town, North Side, East End, Triple C and Red Bay.

They have also been giving concerts in various church halls in the evenings, including Cayman Islands Baptist Church, Bay Holiness Church and Church of God Chapel.

They also traveled to Cayman Brac where they did a concert at the Aston Rutty Centre.
