Greater Support Is Needed For Deaf Children (from Yeovil Express)

YEOVIL MP David Laws has tabled a House of Commons motion calling on the Government to give greater support for the education of deaf children.

Mr Laws has called for the education of deaf children to be included as part of the national public service agreement priority indicators for 2008-2011.

Figures released by the Government earlier this year showed that 32.9 per cent of deaf students achieved five GCSEs at grades A* to C, compared to 57.1 per cent of all children.

And Mr Laws said: "There is no reason why deaf children should not achieve the same standards of education as everyone else. A gap of 24 percentage points in their education attainment is inexcusable.

"The Government should act now to make this a priority, and improve the educational attainment of deaf children. I hope that MPs of all parties will join me in this call."
