A major cultural festival for the deaf will be staged in Akureyri, Iceland, 10-16 July this year.A large number of international theatre groups will attend and the Nordic Cultural Fund is provided a grant of DKK 200,000.

The Nordic Cultural Fund believes that the festival will serve as a great source of inspiration to deaf people in Iceland, in particular the Icelandic deaf theatre Draumasmiðjan, and boost initiatives designed to improve conditions for the deaf.

Tyst Teater from Sweden, Teater Manu, Norway, Quest from the USA, ITV from France, Handteater from the Netherlands, RoyRobShow, Australia and ARBOS from Austria will be just some of the guests at the 20th Nordic Cultural Festival for the Deaf.

Draumasmiðjan hopes that more than 600 deaf and hearing-impaired participants will make it to Iceland from the Nordic countries this summer and enjoy a unique opportunity to experience various forms of theatre for the deaf.

Although the main target audience is deaf people, everybody is, of course, welcome to attend the performances.

As well as the actual plays, a host of other cultural activities are also planned as well as outings to many of the fascinating sights in the area.
