WILLISTON - A plea from a 65-year-old grandmother who promised to make a deputy a grilled cheese sandwich fell on deaf ears as the official arrested the woman on a charge of DUI Thursday night.

Elsie Wright O'Conner (Marion County Jail) According to officials, Deputy Calvin Batts received a call about a Cadillac SUV with bright blue headlights driving north in the southbound lane on North U.S. 27, almost causing a head-on collision.

Batts followed the vehicle and noticed it traveling erratically. He stopped the car and talked with the driver, Elsie Wright O'Conner. He detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath and that her eyes were red and watery and her speech was slurred.

O'Conner tried unsuccessfully to hide an empty Skyy Vodka bottle lying on the driver's side floorboard.

The deputy found another Skyy Vodka bottle, half empty, a cup and some orange juice.

O'Conner failed a field sobriety exercise, according to the Sheriff's Office report.

At the Marion County Jail, she blew .272 and .254 on blood alcohol tests, more than three times .08, the level at which a driver is presumed to be intoxicated.

O'Conner told the deputy, “I almost made it home before you got me.”

According to the report, she also told him: “Come on now, I'm a grandma, can't you do something for me since I'm not that bad. I could have brought you back to my house and made you a grilled cheese sandwich.”

The woman said she usually “don't drive around and drink.”

Checking records, the deputy noted O'Conner was convicted of DUI nearly three years ago.

 Attempted bribery by grilled cheese added to her charges?

I guess some people will do anything to get out of a ticket. :giggle:

once got out of a ticket cuz i said i was deaf. but that only worked once. other times i had to plea not guity and demand an interperter. most towns will drop or reduce the charge a lot rather than deal with the terp issue.

I never got out of ticket for saying deaf. I say it anyway because I really did had a hard time understanding and communicating with the officers
