Got a question

I am wondering if this will work. I have P3 and after we get the new house set up, I will also be getting a Sorenson VP-200 (I think). I feel like I need something not connected to my computer in case someone else in the family is using my computer at the time.

Can a person with any other VP and the P# communicate with each other over these VP's. I have a friend in my Deaf Church who is willing to help me with my ASL and she has a Sorenson VP-200. She isn't sure she can call my P# and vice-versa, ya know?

Most of the people in my d/Deaf club have the Sorenson VP-200. I'm not sure what the others have. I originally did not go for that as I don't know enough ASL. this friend suggested I go ahead and get it, so that I have it once I am more proficient in ASL or PSE. I actually have 3 friends who are willing to help me learn ASL from the church as well as a few people here on AD. My biggest problem with relying on the AD friends is they live in a different time zone and it's not always convenient. I actually have a lot on my computer and can communicate with a lot of people that way, but I was wondering what I do if my internet goes out for some reason. If I have a VP-200 from Sorenson or someone else's VP, will I lose VP availability? Does this last question even make sense? Let me rephrase it all this way:

1. Will my P3 connect and work with other VP's?
2. Is there a VP that will continue to work if I lose internet connectivity for some reason?

Thanks for any help!!

"Maybe".

Yes, your SIP or H.323 based VP should interoperate with other VPs. If you have a problem, report it to your VRS provider that supplied you with your VP.

Some VPs, like the Sorenson nTouch, do not interoperate fully with other VPs (in this case, because it only supports the H.264 codec, and not H.263). This is something Sorenson really needs to fix.

Unlike SIP/H.323, other VP technologies like Skype, iChat, AIM, Facetime, Tango, Qik, etc, are _not_ interoperable at this time, but this may eventually change over time.

If you find your VP does not interoperate, file a complaint with your VRS provider.

Complaint with the FCC too.

I can't connect with my sorenson friends from P3. What should I do? Complain to Sorenson?

Contact Purple customer service. Complain to them. Get your friends to contact Sorenson customer service and complain to them. If neither of them will assist you in getting your calls through, file a complaint on the FCC ECFS system regarding the failure of interop. You'll get someone to respond to you, one way or the other.

Unless citizens start complaining, this problem will only get worse.

yes you can- I used my p3 to call sorenson vp200 user with no problem.

but I was wondering what I do if my internet goes out for some reason. If I have a VP-200 from Sorenson or someone else's VP, will I lose VP availability? Does this last question even make sense? Let me rephrase it all this way:

You are in the same boat as many VRS users. if your home internet or whatever high speed internet you use goes down- you are plumb outa luck, unless you have ntouch mobile on your smartphone.

1. Will my P3 connect and work with other VP's?
it should.
2. Is there a VP that will continue to work if I lose internet connectivity for some reason?
isnt this the way for everyone? even if it does go down, it shouldnt be long.
Thanks for any help!!

what is happened your sorenseon, you complaint to FCC serious

anybody help you OP

I agree you on reason important!

So, I guess this means, if I do not have a Smartphone or that type of cell phone, all VP's are internet based. Okay - that helps me understand a little. That was something I did not know. Hope they can update this technology a little farther to be able to bypass the internet connection.

seems on problem pretty issues on complaint!!! It is very difficult i hope be your update, I think so problem issues tough!

Even smartphones running mobile apps are "internet based". Mobile apps connect back to servers on the internet.

If you have a good 3G or better mobile phone data connection, you simply use that for your mobile app videophone client rather than wifi through your home broadband connection.

Your wireless provider hands that traffic off to the public internet, just as your home broadband connection does.

yup. But its the same thing before we all had cellphones. When a storm blows in, thier landline phone would go dead along with power. Now we are in that stage. IF your internet goes down, chances are there is no power either so you are stuck one way or another. I have a generator and I was able to get back up online only HALF the time.

VRSengineer makes a good point.. smartphone that has VRS on it IS internet based, and its the closest thing to being the backup plan if your home internet goes down.

kristina- don't be afriad to get the vp200 anyways. Its great to have more then one backup and its a great way to practice your asl signing anyways. I wouldnt worry about the internet outage.

If I were you, I would apply for both vp200 and pc ntouch and you would have 3 vrs's as a backup. you can even call ANY VRS thru your vp200 of your choice.

Thanks radioman. When we get the new place, I will definitely get the vp200. I will not get the ntouch as I do not have the right kind of cell phone. (we use tracfone pre-paid).

That is fine, ntouch is not just for smartphones. you can have one on your computer just like p3. might as well get it setup by installer the first time they go to your home with both. you never know.
