Golf pro helps deaf students hit the links | todaysthv.com
This will make you want to get out on the green. A golf pro in upstate New York is using sign language to teach children at the Rochester School for the Deaf how to play the sport.
These middle schoolers got a world class golfing lesson from a former pro. Rob Strano, golf pro says, "The favorite part is the smiles. I enjoy seeing the kids, when they hit a good shot, smiling."
And he did it in their language. Strano says, "So, if you have an interpreter that goes with you to get a golf lesson, they don't know anything about golf, the message gets lost. This wealth of experience and to be able instantly in my mind spinning in the right concept, that helps these kids learn real fast. Because there's no confusion in what I'm telling them as to what the concept is that I want them to do."
Student Gabby Simmons says, "You know, I've made a couple mistakes, but I've hit some good ones as well. And I've learned a lot more about golf."
This is the second time Fob Strano offered golf lessons to students at the Rochester School for the Deaf.
The 12 middle schoolers got a free lesson. A behind the scenes look at the LPGA championship and even met pro Brittany Lincicome. Student Marlena Rauber says, "I felt very excited I met her, because she's a professional golfer. I never met a professional golfer before. You know, I was really thrilled to meet both of them."
Marlena Rauber says volleyball is still her sport of choice, but she hopes to play more golf in the future.
