Q: Dear Jack, I was fascinated as I watched the young man who was signing for the governor at his various news conferences. Do you have any information regarding him? — G.R.
A: Greg Goldman, 37, of Terry works with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitative Services as the state coordinator of interpreting for vocational rehab. His father is deaf and Goldman has been signing all his life and interpreting for 18 years. Transferring English into American Sign Language can be a little difficult because some puns and nuances that hearing people use are hard to translate into deaf culture and deaf language, Goldman says. He never thought he'd be on TV this much. "The most frightful thing about it is knowing other interpreters out there are seeing when I mess up, so you're always trying to do as best you can," with correct spellings, signs, facial expressions and mouth movements, he said. His signing is a complementary interagency arrangement.
