Gifts brighten spirits of kids in hospital - West Kendall - MiamiHerald.com

Taking time to visit hospitalized children and veterans is a practice long held by the members of the Hearing Research Institute. By combining efforts with the Murray Solomon-Brown Post #243 Jewish War Veterans, the groups distributed gifts at Miami Children's Hospital, the children's wards at Jackson Memorial Hospital and veterans at the Miami VA Hospital.

``It's pretty lonely to be in hospital at holiday time and the sight of the veterans with wagon-loads of toys is indeed exciting for the children,'' said Dr. Robert Pickard, medical director of the Hearing Research Institute.

The gifts were purchased by the Institute and donations from the JWV Post, Temple Judea of Coral Gables and others. The Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping deaf children and elderly adults in need. Among the gift-givers were Regine Duret, Susan Pickard, Beke Pickard, Harris Hershkowitz, Brittany Smith, Ellen Roth, Ed Fischer, Alex Kovac, Steve Liebowitz and Ainslee R. Ferdie.

``We started to give gifts just to deaf children, we then expanded to deaf, blind and disabled children and then we decided to give presents to as many children we are able to reach who have to be hospitalized over the holidays,'' Pickard said.
