Lawn Tennis Association GB Deaf Tennis Squad Set For Munich Challenge
The Great Britain Deaf Tennis Squad is set to begin its challenge this weekend in the 2007 Dresse and Maere Cups, the Davis and Fed Cups of deaf tennis, which takes place in Munich, Germany, from Saturday 21 July - Saturday 28 July.
The Dresse and Maere Cups are contested on a four year-cycle and the three-strong Great Britain Women's Team of Catherine Graham (Lincolnshire) and twin sisters Alex and Beth Simmons (Oxfordshire) go in to the 'World Deaf Tennis Cup' as the defending champions in the Maere Cup, the Fed Cup equivalent, having been victorious the last time the event was held in Poertschach, Austria, in 2003.
Three-time National Champion Graham, former National Champion Beth Simmons and sister Alex formed three-quarters of the team that won in Austria four years ago, having remained undefeated in a series of round robin contests against Austria and Germany.
However, the competition is more challenging this time around, with seven other nations contesting the Maere Cup - Chinese Taipei, Germany, Japan, Israel, Italy, Spain and Turkey - with the host nation and Italy expected to be among Great Britain's strongest challengers.
In the Dresse Cup, the Davis Cup equivalent, Great Britain's Men also produced a splendid result in Poertschach in 2003 to finish as runners-up to top seeds Germany, having beaten second seeds France in the semi-finals.
This year seven-time National Champion Peter Willcox (Devon), is joined in the team by two other former National Champions - Sheffield-based student Anthony Sinclair (Northern Ireland) and Daniel Tunstall (Scotland) - as well as 2006 National Championships runner-up Lewis Fletcher (Surrey). Tunstall and Fletcher, as well as Graham in the Women's Team, are all tennis coaches currently based in Wiltshire.
Fifteen nations will contest the Dresse Cup this year, with Austria, Australia, China, France and Germany joining Great Britain among the leading contenders.
The draw for the 2007 Dresse and Maere Cups takes place this evening (Friday 20 July), with play scheduled to start on Saturday 21 July.
GB Women: Catherine Graham, Alex Simmons, Beth Simmons
GB Men: Lewis Fletcher, Anthony Sinclair, Daniel Tunstall, Peter Willcox
