American School for the Deaf Vies for National Academic Bowl
Championship
Gallaudet University hosts 13th annual competition - News - West Hartford News

West Hartford's American School for the Deaf is one of the 16 schools competing in the 13th Annual Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students is sponsored by Gallaudet University.

The two-day tournament takes place April 25 and 26 in the University’s Kellogg Conference Hotel. The championship match will begin at 8 p.m. On Monday, April 26, and may be viewed live on the National Academic Bowl website. <http://ab.gallaudet.edu/>

The Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students, like quiz bowls held at high schools and colleges all over the nation, is a game of questions and answers covering a broad range of topics.

Unlike other competitions, however, questions at Gallaudet's Tournament will be posed in American Sign Language and, instead of signaling they have an answer with the sound of a buzzer, deaf and hard of hearing teams use a flashing light system.

Earlier this year, 76 teams of deaf and hard of hearing students from all-deaf, as well as mainstream, high schools participated in one of five regional contests. The three highest ranking teams from those regional tournaments [plus one at-large team] will now confront one another in a bid to capture the National Academic Bowl trophy.
