The Gambia Association of the Deaf and Heard of Hearing (GADHOH) Brikama Branch recently held its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Brikama Youth Centre in Western Region.
Lamin Ceesay chairman of the occasion and also Deputy Director of GADHOH said that Brikama is the first regional branch established by his office that has its own committee responsible for the day to day running of the branch.
National president of GADHOH Mr Abdoulie Njie applauded the branch for their achievements.
Chairman of the Branch Mr Karamo Sanyang dilated on activities his branch had undertaken from August 2006 to August 2007. Prominent among them, he said, was the establishment of a nursery school for deaf children, Sign language class for deaf adults, Home visits, the acquisition of a plot of land from the Governor’s office and Brikama Area council and staff training.
Despite all these successes Mr Sanyang mentioned some of their constraints relating to both finance and mobility. He appealed to NGOs and individuals to help develop their office located next to Gambia College.
Sanyang used the opportunity to appeal to the management of GRTS television to help provide an interpreter to enable deaf and hard of hearing people to know the current happenings in the country.
Alvean Jones a VSO volunteer with GADHOH dilated on the plan of action for the branch for the year 2008.
Abdoukadir Drammeh, committee member of the branch, revealed that they have a registered membership of 155 from Brikama and satellite villages.
Mrs. Isatou Sanyang, Director of the Female wing of GADHOH, called for deaf people to collaborate and work hard for their own development.
Kebba Bojang represented Chief Dembo Santang Bojang of Kombo Central.
