Hi there. I'm scheduled for my first Cochlear implants in August (Right - Nucleus Freedom Contour and Left - Nucleus CI422) and has more questions than answers - or rather I'd prefer the answers coming from somebody who had the same or similar implants. Please brace yourself some of these questions are pretty stupid...

1. What exactly do they mean by "sensation of sound", none of the doctors are able to give me a satisfactory answer or rather something that I understand and can relate to. What does this compare to? (Guess my question is to somebody that were able to hear sometime prior in their life)

2. How comfortable are the implants?

3. I'm not sure I'm convinced and sold on the bilateral implant. Do need to admit that my daugter has a point - You're not going to become more deaf!

4. Are there any practical issues that I should be aware of in getting the impants?

Any comments will be appreciated

I will try an answer some of your questions re Cochlear Implants.
1) to me there is no difference re: sound from my Implant to what I heard- unaided -years ago
2) comfort: I don't notice my Implant at all-completely comfortable. That is what the audi test just after activating.
3) Bilateral implants- no comment I have only one. It is my understanding "most adults" don't benefit from two. Cost factor consideration? Aside: as far as i concerned- don't require another one.
4) To me most important to have one's Implant on all the time except in my case-swimming/sleeping. The idea is to get your brain used to all the new sounds coming in.
also, you should be feeding your audi everything-hearing wise to determine what "mapping required" which can only come from you.

Good luck and much success

I have had my Implant almost 6 years now and was 70 when Implanted. No regrets on the decision made over 6 years ago for consideration of an Implant.

Thank you so much for the feedback. Got to admit I scared. Also not sure about the bilateral implant. Would have loved to first only do one but all the Dr. Recommend the two at this point the final decision will be if my medical accept this or not.

Thanks again I feel much better about the whole thing
