First Anti-Bullying Book for Deaf and Hearing Children Launched by the OCSL
Bu says "No!" to Bullies. The Open College of Sign Language (OCSL) has announced the first ever anti-bullying book written for both hearing and deaf children in full English grammar with each word illustrated by a 'sign' to teach hearing children sign language is to be available to buy from the 6th of December.
As a deaf-led organisation the OCSL (Open College of Sign Language) listened to the voice of the deaf people to develop its provision of National Signed English and felt there was a need for an anti-bullying book to combat bullying and reduce isolation between hearing and deaf children. The key statement of the campaign being that, 'No child should be isolated; no child should have to suffer the devastation of bullying'.
'Bu says, "No!" to Bullies' is aimed at children aged 4-10 years of age and is written in full English Grammar with each word being illustrated by a 'sign' beneath to teach hearing children sign language. Bu the elephant with his friends; Rudy, Roscoe, Webster and Olivia may well become the loveable, cartoon icons that help to change the thinking and education of some of tomorrow's adults.
Christine Hamilton who is launching the campaign commented: "Not only is Bu giving the OCSL the privilege of being able to work with schools to deliver a radical, hard-hitting, anti-bullying message, but it is also giving us the wonderful opportunity to provide the makings of a solution to the isolation of deaf children, U.K wide."
A spokesperson for the OCSL continued: "To date there has never been an anti-bullying icon that is particularly prolific and made an impact upon our children where it counts most; in the playground. And Super-Bu, as the UK's first anti-bullying computer game to be developed in National Signed English, will take our children to another level of being able to understand just how wrong and how harmful bullying really is."
The book will be launched on the evening of 6th of December in Liverpool by Neil and Christine Hamilton and is available for purchase from the 7th December via Sign Language Courses Liverpool, Manchester, Cheshire, Northwest, Merseyside or directly from the OCSL contactable via Sign Language Courses Liverpool, Manchester, Cheshire, Northwest, Merseyside
