PEOPLE with hearing and speech difficulties are being neglected by almost 90% of businesses in Yorkshire, says a charity.

The Royal National Institute for the Deaf says more than 88% of businesses in the county failed to take up training to make them more accessible to this group.

The charity says these were shocking findings. They come a year after the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act.

The charity says reasonable adjustments must be made by all `service providers' to help people affected by disabilities - or they may face prosecution.

It also says that while most companies have made changes - such as improving access and providing large type and Braille literature - a large number still fail to make adequate provision for phone access for people with hearing or speech impairments.

There are 10.8m people in the UK who are deaf or speech impaired.
