A fire engine rushing to a medical emergency Monday afternoon collided with a car driven by a deaf man at the intersection of Riverside and Merrill avenues.

Officer Matt Parrish said the driver of a Honda Civic was waiting at a red light to make a left on Merrill as the fire engine approached with its sirens blaring and lights flashing. Because all the northbound lanes were blocked, the engine pulled into the oncoming lanes.

The driver of the car is totally deaf, Parrish said, so he did not notice the approaching engine. The light changed, and he began to turn left in front of the fire truck, he said.

The driver of the engine veered away, but couldn't avoid scraping along the side of the Honda. The fire truck ripped off the car's front fender and crashed into a fire hydrant, Parrish said.

The bumper was smashed, but the truck was moving slowly enough that it didn't shear off the hydrant, he said.

It's a good thing, Parrish said, because the fire truck came to a stop on top of the shut-off valve.

The driver of the Honda, Harold Levy, 58, of Riverside, said he was on his way to drop some things off at Goodwill.

"Thank goodness I am not hurt," he wrote in a notebook, pointing out the Goodwill-bound items flung about the inside of his car.

Parrish said Levy was not cited.
