Finally, justice for 3 disabled-India-NEWS-The Times of India

Three brilliant but disabled youths have finally got their due. After TOI highlighted the discrimination against them — of being denied a service cadre despite being selected in the 2005 civil services exams — the Prime Minister took up the matter and on Monday all three were allotted services.

Secretary of the department of personnel and training (DoPT) L K Joshi confirmed to TOI that Bangalore’s Salma Fahim, who has a hearing impairment, has been allotted Indian Administrative Service, while partially deaf Abhijit Chakraborty of Kolkata has been given Indian Foreign Service and Mani Ram Sharma from Bharatpur — who is totally deaf — has been allotted Post and Telegraph Finance Accounts Service (P&TFAS).

Soon after TOI reported these three cases on November 5, the wheels of government started moving. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is learnt to have called for their files. Although late by four months — by July the others in their batch were given their service cadres — justice finally came to Salma, Abhijit and Mani Ram.
