I bought a 1999 Saturn SW1. I had no problem transferring it into my name. However, when I sold it, the buyer said that he wasn't able to transfer it from my name to his name. DMV said there was something like there were 2 existing titles to the car. I don't know what that means. All I know is that I had it transferred in my name without any problem. Ever have this type of problem before?

No, never had it happen to me. That does not sound like a good thing to have hanging open.

Do you/did you physically have a copy of the title? Usually on the back there's a section for transferring it.

You don't want this guy driving around in the car and maybe getting tickets, etc., which will be charged to you.

Can you go down to the DMV with your buyer and get this straightened out?

Yes, I have a clear title in my name. Will be able to get it straightened out, but not sure what the issue is.

You just never know. Could be a clerical mistake in DMV; could be someone never cancelled the first title of the first owner when you bought it and thus there were two titles (the original one and then yours); could be a problem that goes back to the dealership never having transferred title correctly to the first buyer.

Hope you get it straightened out with no more hassles.

Could be. In Calif, each vehicle have one title (pink slip) for current owner or bank holder.

I dont think there is really 2 titles. Just two entries on their computers. One with a lien on it and the other one with clear title. Did you have the note with bank from your mom paying off the loan when you transferred title?

Sounds like the guy has problems, not you. Did you sign the title transferring ownership to him yet ? If I were you, I'd go to the DMV with him and get it straighten out. You don't want anything linked to you when you sold the car.

I don't think there was a lien on the title. I know that the car was paid in full before it was sold to me. Yeah, I have signed the title transferring the ownership to him.

ok on the last part. however- I think u misunderstood me for lien part. Many people get the cars via loans and when they do, a lien is recorded electronically AND paper. Just because an item loan is paid off before transferring to you doesnt mean its recorded properly. Many times the banks forget to send electronic info to dmv saying the loan is satisfied.

Thank you. The buyer was able to get title transferred in his name. He doesn't seem to understand English very well. Therefore, I wasn't able to figure why there was a hold up. Either way, I am glad this is done. Thank you for your help. :)
