The first week of October is Deaf Awareness Week and Disability Services has many events planned to celebrate the event.
Deaf Awareness Week is usually observed during the first week of October but there are activities planned throughout the month. ETSU has held these activities for the last 10 years and has become more involved since the development of Silent Bucs, an organization for students who are deaf, hearing impaired or just interested in that area.
Libby Tipton, interpreter coordinator for Disability Services, helps to plan the annual events.
"These activities try to increase public awareness of the deaf and hearing impaired and the issues they face," Tipton said. "Hopefully, this will help others to understand the lives the hearing impaired live. They have ordinary lives, they just can't hear."
The activities schedule is tentative.
On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3 and 4, there will be American Sign Language workshops at 2 p.m. in the Culp Center. There will be information booths in the Atrium on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 4 and 5.
Also on Monday, Oct.3, the Deaf Community and Silent Bucs will be going to Fenders Farm Corn Maize in Jonesborough at 6 p.m. and on Tuesday, Oct 3, they will be going bowling at Holiday Lanes in Johnson City at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Disability Services will be holding free hearing screenings on the third floor of the Culp Center.
"This is a good opportunity to someone to get their hearing checked, especially if they are afraid they are losing their hearing," Tipton said. "This will help."
Disability Services will be holding a lunch and learn with Mike Depew on Thursday, Oct 6, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Culp Center. On Friday night at 7 in the Culp Auditorium, they will be showing a captioned movie, Madagascar.
On Saturday, Oct 8, there will be a Deaf Banquet in the multipurpose room of the CPA at 6 p.m. There will also be a keynote speaker. It costs $15 to attend this event and reservations must be received by Sept. 29.
There will also be a play in the Bud Frank Theater on Oct. 21 and 22 called Forever Plaid. It will be interpreted on one of the nights but the date has not been finalized. The play starts at 7:30 p.m.
Peter Cook, a renowned deaf speaker, will also be coming to ETSU for Deaf Awareness Week. The date will be announced at a later time.
The public is welcome to come to all the events.
