The Government is considering lowering the grade for deaf students willing to join teacher training colleges.

Assistant minister for Education, Science and Technology Kilemi Mwiria said although the ministry does not discriminate against students willing to join the colleges, deaf students would be given special consideration. Answering a question by Mbita MP Otieno Kajwang' (Narc), Mwiria said the current requirement net for admission to primary teachers colleges is mean grade C (plain).

This, he said applies to all applicants. The minimum academic requirements for admission to diploma teacher colleges is mean grade C (plus).

Mwiria said in addition the chosen teaching subject must be at C (plain) level.

This will apply to all candidates from 2005.

Kajwang' asked the minister why the Government changed its original undertaking of admitting students with hearing impairment with lower grade D in the KCSE and replaced it with the same grade for all students irrespective of the obvious limitation.
