DNA - Mumbai - Emergency SMS service for the mute and deaf - Daily News & Analysis

The Mumbai Police launched an emergency SMS number for the mute and the deaf. The number – 9320200100 — will not be toll free like 100.

Speaking with DNA, Joint Commissioner Police (Administration), Hemant Karkare said, “We had a high-level meeting internally about how to reach all the sections of the society.

“We then came up with the SMS idea for deaf and dumb citizens, since they cannot make use of the land line number in the control room.”

Karkare added that, the service is first of its kind in the country. “The service is not yet toll free and would cost the minimum fare of 30 paise per SMS. We will see the public response before making this service toll free. We also hope to increase the number of phone lines for the SMS,” he said.

After an SMS is received, the information will be passed by the police to the mobile wireless and the police station concerned will follow up the case.

The service will be operational from August 15.
