Hey all,

We have 3 kids living with us. I'm wondering if there is a quick alternative to playback DVD movies on a TV instead of depending on the DVD player or the DVD disc itself. Many of the DVDs my girlfriend have are scratched, so we want to save some of them that are usable and doesn't freeze up. It would be worthless and time consuming to copy all the good DVDs to a Mac Mini and connect it to a HDTV which is expensive. Any other ideas?

I wish they didn't make DVDs in the first place because they are not resistant to scratches because kids don't know better.

Wow tough! I am understanding you feel not worth to copy all the good DVDs to a Mac Mini and connect it to a HDTV. But I suggest you, copy some DVDs to a Mac Mini if necessary, thats simple way.. you won't have some headache about dvd's scratch.. ;)

Good luck with your wisdom decision..

Ah no one has any other ideas? :hmm: Did anyone overlook this thread because everyone's busy debating on oil and politics. :laugh2:

I would love to copy DVD to my computer but they made it very difficult. I've tried to do that so won't have to get out dvd each time I want to watch something.

Yes, it's time consuming too. Dang piracy laws. I wish it would be simple as just copying a DVD disc to the hard drive rather than breaking the copy protection code and copy it to the hdd.

Oh really, I'm very good at rip the DVD to put in HDD.

You need find an apps to decrypted the DVD protection code, of course, it is a huge space waste.

That's not what I'm looking for. Do you want me to do each DVD for every 1-2 hours then do the other DVD and the other? This takes too much time and not worth the time.

Only thing I can suggest is a DVD Changer that can hold hundreds of DVDs. They can be pricey though

Well, It take me around 5 minutes for each DVD at 20x speed.

Did you forget about breaking the code...takes longer than you think.

Ahhh, no wonder. Ill try it in Boot Camp with the software you provided and see the difference.

or download movies off from torrent, long as you own same title of DVD version so you will be ok.

Another problem. Most Apple hardware's dvd speed go up to 6x-8x. (I think) due slim hardware. So better buy a fat DVD-burner like 24x

This is fat dvd burner.
Newegg.com - LG Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD Burner - Bulk - CD / DVD Burners

This is SATA->USB.
Newegg.com - VANTEC CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter

OR

This is dvd burner with USB but little pricey.

Yes, I forget about Mac Pro. Nothing to wrong with firewire 800. It's good idea.

You can teach kids to take good care of DVD movies or have put DVD movies in anything that is inaccessible for kids to get one and have ask you for permission to take DVD out.

Kids will be kids, 'nuff said.

Depending on age and mentality, kids will start being careful with DVD discs with responsibility at around 8 or so. Its impossible at 5 years old. Kids learn from accidents or damage to things, not by telling them this and that. Its how boys are.
