A Dundee MSP is supporting a parliamentary motion which could improve services for children suffering from deafness.

Joe Fitzpatrick is backing his SNP parliamentary colleague Bashir Ahmad on his motion calling for an integrated national framework to bring together health, education and social care services for youngsters with hearing impairments.

Mr Fitzpatrick believes deafness is not a learning disability and should not prevent children from achieving their true potential.

The Dundee West MSP said: "The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) has discovered that following diagnosis of deafness at birth by the use of newborn hearing screening tests, parents in Dundee often find it difficult to access information, advice, and the best levels of support for their deaf child in the early years as they prepare to start school and beyond.

"I was happy to support this motion calling for a coordinated approach to providing support for deaf children, and I am pleased that the Scottish Government has now agreed to meet with the National Deaf Children's Society to discuss the issue further."

As a result of parliamentary support for the motion, Minister for Children and Young People, Adam Ingram, has agreed to meet with the NDCS to discuss the issue.

Chris Ratcliffe, director of the National Deaf Children's Society Scotland, said: "90% of deaf children are born to families with no prior experience of deafness.

"It is crucial that these families get the support and information they need to ensure that their child has the best possible start in life.

"NDCS is delighted with the MSP's support, which is making a real difference to the lives of deaf children and their parents, as we now have an opportunity to work with the Scottish Government to ensure that the specific needs of deaf children are included in its forthcoming early years strategy."
