Dumbarton cabbie helps deaf-blind poodle return home - Lennox Herald

A MYSTERY Dumbarton taxi driver has been hailed a hero after helping a deaf-blind dog return to its home in the early hours of the morning.

Mario the poodle recently went walkies from his house in Netherbog Avenue and ended up in Garshake – which he would have had to cross the busy Stirling Road to reach.

Owner Elizabeth McKeever had to wake up a neighbour just after 1am to help her search for her 17-year-old pet, who cannot see or hear.

But the wait of almost two hours was ended when the cabbie drove up to her house with the dog in the back of his car.

Elizabeth wanted to give the kind driver some form of reward – but he drove off without accepting anything.

Elizabeth said: “I went outside to empty the kitchen bin just after 1am, when it was like a skating rink, and I hadn’t realised that Mario was with me.

“I went back into the house and wondered where he had gone. There was no sign of him anywhere.

“He sleeps in the daftest places so I woke up my neighbour, who is younger and fitter than me, to look round the garden for him.

“But he wasn’t there either. I thought about phoning the police as by this time I was absolutely frantic.

“I knew he would be out in the freezing cold without being able to see or hear.

“Then after about two hours the taxi pulled up and there was Mario, sitting in the back seat wagging his tail.

“It turned out he had been up in Garshake – and wouldn’t have had any idea where he was.

“The driver saw him darting about and bumping into things, and must have known where to bring him by the badge that Mario wears round his neck.”

Elizabeth, who has owned poodles for 40 years and currently has another one, was anxious to express thanks afterwards.

She added: “If I even knew what taxi firm the driver was from I would be sending him something to say thank you.

“My neighbour offered to give him money but he said ‘not at all’ and just drove away. He didn’t even give his name.”

Oh, bless his doggie-lovin' heart!! What a kind man. Wonderful ending to a story that could have been a tragedy.
