Dogs for the Deaf will celebrate its 30th anniversary during an open house from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at 10175 Wheeler Road, near Lower Table Rock in Central Point.
There will be tours, demonstrations, anniversary cake and beverages, and the gift shop will be open.
Dogs for the Deaf rescues dogs from animal shelters and trains them as assistance dogs for the hearing impaired, seniors and those with special needs. It is the largest and oldest hearing dog training facility in the world and is a founding member of Assistance Dogs International.
Since its inception in 1977, Dogs for the Deaf has rescued and trained thousands of dogs and placed hundreds with individuals who are hearing impaired all across the country and in Canada and Puerto Rico.
Hearing dogs are professionally trained to respond and alert their owners to normal household sounds, such as oven timers, door knocks, ringing phones, a baby crying and alarms. Dogs are also trained and placed to provide safety, confidence and companionship for those suffering from Alzheimer's, cerebral palsy and strokes. Dogs for the Deaf recently started a program for children with autism.
