Do you think historical movies are educational?

Suggest your opinions on here.

My answer:

I do think historical movies are very educational. You can learn from them.

no.
IMO, movies don't always provide an accurate account events. some create events or persons for dramatic effect and totally fictionalize events. also the directors point of view, ideologies, political agenda influence the film, which can create a biased movie instead of an accurate film.

There is a bias in EVERYTHING we read and watch. It is up to the reader or viewer to be able to identify falsified information and bias. That is the basis in which all historians, and students of History, are trained in to know that.

I do think there is some benefit in historical films, however in citing them, you also have to clarify the bias in those films and only use it in a manner of "the director/actor/screenwriter interpreted this event to be... blah blah blah"

yeah that is true. there are many people that do not know history well or can figure out the differences. many people are very easily influenced.

I absolutely agree with you both, Souggy and CC.

The Downfall and the Great Raid are known as the most accurate movies based on historic events and facts. I saw the Great Raid and it only had a few minor flaws which were no big deal.

My history teacher last semester used a lot of movies to emphasize what he would say throughout lectures and notes. He made history classes fun, but he always made sure to clarify something if he thought he had to. I can't remember a lot of the movies he showed, but I remember one about Stalingrad. I also remember that near the end of the semester we watched American Graffiti twice because we were learning about 1950s culture. That was one movie I really didn't see any point in watching... and it really wasn't very good.
