Ok, let's say a bike is for sale. The asking price is $150. The person offers $120 and the seller agrees to sell the bike for $120.

Now, if this same bike was up for sale for $120, the person probably won't buy it for $120. Maybe they'll even make an offer too. If the seller stays at $120, the person will probably walk away.

Sometimes, I kind of wonder if people are just not interested in paying asking price regardless of whether it's a great deal or not. They just want to make offers.

I started in college as a psychology major so sometimes I like to try to figure what other people are thinking.

The price a person will pay isnt just about getting it a bit cheaper then what its advertised for. Brand and quality often decide if i buy something as it isnt all about money....just my thoughts

Survival instinct.

Seller wants as much money as he can get. Buyer wants to spend as little as he can.

I always try to barter....seems everything to me is overpriced anyway! But if something is priced at a very good price, and I know the seller won't go any lower, and if I really want it, I'll give him the full price.

I think it's simply good shopping sense. The best shoppers never pay full price for anything so, unless the seller adds the word "FIRM" to their advertised price, buyers are going to show up expecting to haggle.

It's a dance. A well -informed buyer and a well-informed seller should be able to make a fair deal. But usually, one side will have a bit more information or resources than the other.
