Dinner to benefit deaf, blind student fund | dinner, blind, deaf - YumaSun
The Southwest Regional (SWR) Cooperative of the Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) is hosting a spaghetti dinner Sunday to benefit the Parent Assistance Fund.
The fund helps with the costs of activities, school supplies and audiological equipment for the families of students who are unable to pay.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles in Yuma is allowing SWR to use Eagles Hall, 225 S. 1st Ave., for the event.
The dinner from noon to 4 p.m. will include spaghetti, salad, bread and a drink. Tickets at $5 each can be purchased in advance.
Music entertainment will be provided by pianist Jimmy Caves. There will also be family activities, raffles and face painting at the event.
For more information, call 246-9174.
Over 40 students in Yuma schools are part of the deaf and blind program.
“The fundraiser helps pay for events we have throughout each school year, including summer camps, guest speaker presentations and the Junior Blind Olympics,” said Brittany Schultz, teacher of the deaf at Cibola High School.
“These programs are important, but like it is around the state, budgets are getting cut. Through our Parent Assistance Fund, we are able to assist the parents of students who may not be able to pay for certain activities. We definitely utilize that a lot every year.”
In addition, the funding is used for the Educational Placement Program that places students at appropriate local schools depending on their level of hearing loss, Schultz added.
The students, who range in age from kindergarten to seniors, will help serve the meal and provide entertainment.
The SWR Cooperative is a partnership among local school districts in southwest Arizona and ASDB. Its goal is to provide appropriate educational programs and services for students with sensory impairments.
The joint efforts of the local schools and the SWR Cooperative help students who are deaf, blind, hearing impaired or visually impaired succeed in the general education environment.
Although SWR provides services to totally blind students and deaf students who have severe or profound hearing losses, the organization also helps visually impaired students who have some vision and to hearing impaired students who have mild to moderate hearing losses.
