Since we have many dog enthusiasts here and have had some training discussions, thought I'd post a link to this new book from another forum I'm on - it's a dog publication site and forum called Dogwise and they have a new book that details differences between dogs and wolves from a physical and behavioral perspective; also seems to have info. on hybrids and how this all relates to handling in shelter situations-
"Between Dog and Wolf"
Welcome to Dogwise.com

It's easy to differ between a dog in general and wolf. It's very difficult to differ between a Siberian Husky and a wolf. How do you tell difference between an Alaskan Malamute or Samoyed and a wolf??

to me, its' obvious between the Mal, the wolf and Sammy <Samoyed> or any combination of them.
Mal's are very large, husky animals with shorter, broader ears and stockier build then wolves, curled tail as part of how they hold it - wolves' tails hang down or are even with plane of back, or are upraised depending on status but they don't curl the way the Nordic dog breeds <Sammy, Husky, Mal> do.

Sammy's are white. No coat color variation.

Dogs bark or howl or "woo woo" - common in the Nordic breeds. Wolves as a rule don't bark as adults.

Wolves and sled dogs' faces are very different from each other and they have longer legs with bigger paws in relation to the legs. They have wider skulls than dogs do with longer teeth and capable of more jaw pressure.

Wolves have a very distinct social structure and behave very differently than dogs do.

here's more info. from a wolf conservation facility called Wolf Park in Indiana about differences:
