Devils Lake police say Paula Lee Hartze, 43, was stabbed to death in her home over the weekend.

Hartze died as a result of stab wounds to the torso, according to Bruce Kemmet, Devils Lake Police Chief.

Hartze worked as an English teacher at the North Dakota School for the Deaf in Devils Lake for the past 13 years, according to Superintendent Dennis Fogelson.

“She was very beloved teacher we are going to miss her. It is a tragedy and we are trying to cope with it right now,” Fogelson said.

The school will hold a memorial service in honor of Hartze beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday in the school’s gymnasium, Fogelson said. Family members have requested that any memorial donations be marked for the Friends of Deaf Children Foundation, care of the North Dakota School for the Deaf, 1401 College Drive N., Devils Lake, N.D. 58301.

“It’s been a very difficult time for all of us,” Fogelson said. “Everyone is still in shock.”

Police have not named a suspect and have not made an arrest.

Kemmet said there were no signs of forced entry to Hartze’s home and officers do not believe the public is at risk.
