Designer in need of help
I am a Multimedia Degree level student in my third year of my course in the UK.
I currently taking part in a Design competition called the RSA Design Directions
I am looking for some Deaf or Hard of hearing people who are fluent in British Sign Language who could answer some questions for me so I can continue to research for my product.
A rapid social and technological change gives us the opportunity to rethink products and services that are not responsive to people's real needs and capabilities. My brief is not design for the disabled, but more about integration of our society into a more inclusive world.
I am hard of hearing and have considered learning sign language for many years. I looked into Virtual Signing and how with research and development the product that I am proposing could be a possibility in the near future. Winners of the completion may have there products/ ideas taken up by corporate sponsorship.
Obviously there are great technicalities to work out but if you could concentrate of the idea as a whole, when answering the questions it would benefit me greatly.

(1) Do you feel this device would help you communicate, with people who don't speak your language?
(2)How do you normally communicate with someone who does not speak your language?
(3)Do you have to write in order to communicate with anyone in social situations? Do you feel comfortable with this or would you prefer to sign?
(4)How do people react when they realise you speak sign language and you do not?
(5)Do you use mobile technology?
(6)Can you understand this signed animation?

(7)Putting aside technological difficulties, would there be any social situation you would not feel comfortable using this device?
