Ghana Crime & Punishment of Wednesday, 19 September 2007 - Defiled Girl Goes Deaf And Dumb
A 28-year-old house-help, Eric Kwabena, is in police custody for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) One pupil.
The girl is reported to have gone deaf and dumb two days after her ordeal.
The victim, who is currently undergoing medical treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra, can only communicate by writing and by sign language.
Apart from her hearing and speech impairment, the teenage girl, who is described as a brilliant student, is unable to eat on her own unless someone feeds her.
The alleged rapist told the police in his caution statement that he acted under spiritual influence because he saw the image of his wife in the girl. He will appear in court today to be charged with defilement.
The Public Relations Officer of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service office in Accra, Inspector Irene Oppong, in a briefing, said on September 5, 2007, the victim and her younger sister, who live at Fan Milk in Accra, were sent by their mother to sell some foodstuffs at about 1 p.m.
She said upon reaching Olebu, an area within Fan Milk, where the suspect lived, Kwabena invited the two girls into his house ostensibly to buy some of the foodstuffs.
Inspector Oppong said Kwabena then sent the victim’s younger sister to call him his friend from a nearby house so that he could take advantage of her absence to have sexual intercourse with the victim.
Unfortunately for him, the little girl returned from the errand quicker than he had anticipated.
Bent on carrying out his ill-motive, Kwabena mapped out another strategy by sending the little girl again, but this time, to a very far destination.
He then pulled the victim into his room, covered her mouth to subdue her screams and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
Inspector Oppong said after the act, the suspect cautioned the victim never to inform anyone about her ordeal, to which she obliged until her younger sister broke the story to their mother.
The little girl informed their mother that on her return from the second errand, she saw her elder sister weeping. After interrogation by her mother, the victim narrated the story.
Inspector Oppong said the mother then reported the case to the DOVVSU at Odorkor on September 6, 2007, following which the suspect was arrested.
She said initially, the girl was able to speak but a day after the report was made, she went deaf and dump, based on which she was referred to a psychologist and later to the Police Hospital for medical treatment.
In his caution statement, Kwabena told the police that he had a problem with his wife as a result of which she packed out of the house.
He said when he saw the victim, she appeared to him as his wife, alleging that the victim even responded when he called her by his wife’s name.
Kwabena said in their conversation, the victim (whom he saw as his wife) assured him that the problem would soon be resolved for her to return.
According to him, after the conversation, they agreed to have intimacy, and it was only in the middle of the act that he heard the girl shouting and also found out that she was not his wife.
