Debswana Corporate Social Investment Programme has come to the rescue of the Botswana Society of the Deaf School in Ramotswa. The company has committed P250,000 for the renovation of the boys' hostel roof and the sewage. The dilapidated facility has forced the school authorities to have the boys and girls share hostels.

Debswana said that projects such as that of Botswana Society for the Deaf are close to the company's heart. "We are passionate about our association with these entities as they give our children, brothers and sisters a spirit of moral courage. It is this character that will go a long way in shaping Botswana's destiny," said a statement from Debswana.

The renovation is scheduled to be complete at the end of next month.

The Botswana Society for the Deaf School in Ramotswa was established in 1979 with six children and was funded by the German organisation, Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) until 1996.

Currently, the school has about 127 children - 66 boys and 61 girls between three to 18 years of age. The centre has a nursery and pupils from standard one to standard seven. The school authority saw it fit to have a nursery so that the children should learn to read and write their first language, which is sign language at a tender age.

To date, Debswana, through its Corporate Social Investment programme, has committed over P1.2 million to various centres of the disabled in Botswana.
