Deaf Woman victimized by not having an Interpreter.

On several occasions deaf individuals have been victimized by not being provided a sign interpreter on several occasions. One such woman, Tammy Bainter tells the story that caused her to loose her 3 children and the ability to have any more children.

Tammy visited her doctor complaining of stomach cramps when she was 4 months pregnant. She was told to go home and rest. She gave birth to a son in the restroom of her home. She returned to the clinic after loosing her son and was not given an interpreter therefore and explanation was never understood not compassion could be effectively be expressed.

Later, Tammy again was victimized. She had 3 daughters, after the birth of her last child, she claims that her mother in law had her to sign a release for
surgery to have an operation for an infection. She agreed only to learn after
the surgery, that the surgery was not for a uterus infection, instead it was a
tabulation. All hopes that Tammy and her husband had planning for a son came to an end.

Later, Mrs. Bainter again was tricked to sign a temporarily custody over to her in-laws during her recovery time resulting from another surgery. Her youngest child "Sunnie," was only 9 months old when her mother was banished from the home, never allowed to see her mother again.

Today, 5years later, after the death of the mother-in-law, Sunnie, is in the
care of the courts until a safe home is attained. Ex in-laws, are coming forth
in support of Tammy's case, in hopes of returning Sunnie to her mother. However, attorney fees are overwhelming and the case is in jeopardy of being loss due to lack of funds.

Tammy's story has been heard by Attorney, Lucy Wood with Advocacy INC. from Austin, TX. She was requested to be a witness and take her story to capitol hill in hopes of creating political support in the passing of the Medicaid bill. This bill is on the table and designed to have Interpreters fees funded for medical appointments. Tammy is one of many deaf people who has been
discriminated against when requesting Interpreters at doctor offices and
visiting hospitals.

Sad to hear...

Oh my gosh! That's, indeed, beyond terrible and incredibly unjust. :eek2:
I hope that Mrs. Bainter will gain the custody of Sunnie somehow and soon.

It's dreadful to hear deaf patients being discriminated in hospitals and the like because they don't have good understanding of the English language let alone jargons used in the Medicine field.
