DaNisha Terrell sways and dips while she practices salsa, twisting and turning to show off what she's learned.

Even more impressive than her dance moves is the fact that she does them all without being able to hear the music.

Terrell, 29, a resident of Williston, has been deaf since birth, and doctors have not been able to tell her why, she said to her friend Grayson Harrop, who interpreted the interview.

Despite her hearing impairment, Terrell took hip-hop classes at her former school. Inspired by the rhythmic dance moves of the 1998 movie "Dance With Me," she decided to try salsa next.

"Why not salsa?" Terrell asked. "'Dance With Me' is my favorite movie. It brought out my passion."

Terrell contacted the Salsa Caliente Dance Studios in Gainesville.

She started attending the classes in July 2006, and she picked up the dance moves by watching others, she said.

Harrop accompanies her to classes a couple of times a week and interprets for her.

But even with Harrop as an interpreter, Terrell said, "Eyes, eyes, eyes, that's what it's all about."

She can feel the vibrations of the music, but she mostly depends on watching and counting.

There are also signals the instructors use to indicate which dance move everyone should do.

In addition to dancing at her favorite clubs, Rehab and Plasma, Terrell practices her salsa moves at home and invites Harrop over.

Terrell said although she is deaf, she rarely misses a beat.

"I want to show the deaf that it is possible," she said.
