Deaf team dedicates silver - Fiji Times Online

THE Fiji Deaf Rugby sevens team dedicated its silver medal win in Australia to teammate Saimone Vuniwaqa who was not granted a visa to Australia due to military connections in the family.

Fiji narrowly lost to New South Wales in the sevens rugby and touch rugby final at the 16th Australian Deaf Games in Geelong, Melbourne, Australia.

Upon their arrival the side has issued a challenge to the Digicel Fiji sevens team to return with the Wellington crown.

Vuniwaqa who hails from Bua in Vanua Levu was one of the happiest man to greet the team for reaching the final but wanted to be part of the team.

Vuniwaqa is one of the key players in the team.

He was unfortunate not to be granted a visa despite his physical disabilities stature.

Former Fiji Netball under-21 manager Selina Kuruleca hosted the team to a BBQ lunch at her home in Delainavesi yesterday.

Kuruleca's cousin Peni is also part of the team.

"We are proud of the effort of these boys.

"They defied the odds to return with the silver medal, congratulations to them," she said.

"I hosted them because my cousin is in the team and this is just a way to congratulate and appreciate their efforts," Kuruleca said.

"I believe the boys are sorry for their teammate, Saimone who did not go because of military connections."

"He (Saimone) is a key player in the team and I think if he was there it could have been a different story altogether," she said.

Fiji lost to New South Wales in the final of the men's touch rugby and sevens rugby.
