SAN ANTONIO -- A 15-year-old deaf boy's hearing device worth an estimated $10,000 was stolen at school Monday.

Anthony Rojas had taken the device off and placed it in his backpack during PE class at MacArthur High School when he discovered it was missing.

Rojas had been relying on the device to hear and talk since he had a cochlear implant placed behind his right ear two years ago.

"He's just barely learning to say cat, book, bag and little simple words," said Maria Rojas, the boy's mother. "We take it for granted that we have hearing and they depend on those devices to hear any little simple word."

Maria Rojas said without the hearing device, her son can't hear anything.

"I don't know who would do that. He's disabled."

She also said that she can't afford another device.

"If somebody out there ... would please return it to my son so he can be able to hear," she said.

This is exactly why oralism as a philosophy is so messed up.....Sure the hearing devices give kids a chance to parcipate somewhat in hearing society, but it comes at a HUGE HUGE montary cost!

Miss D

How did you hear about this story all the way down under? Do you know someone here in SA?

News like that are very easy to find on the Internet like at Google and Yahoo. :)

Brian, yes I do....the high costs of hearing aids is the reason I'm on disabilty!!!!

No, DD, the costs, which are high to YOU, are atypical in the industry and not at rip-off rates. Show a little appreciation for this marvelous appliance.

I do apprciate my aids....I love them!!! But they are rip-offs....I know that an aid can be maunfactored for only $50.00.....plus the costs of keeping and maintaining them is out of control! You can't deny that chosing oralism does raise a dhh kid's /dhh person's health care costs!!!!
