Belleville Intelligencer - Ontario, CA
Teachers at Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf in Belleville and other provincial schools will receive a 12 per cent pay raise over the next four years.
Ken Coran, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, told The Intelligencer Friday that the approximately 210 teachers who work for provincial schools ratified a new four-year collective agreement with their employer, the McGuinty government.
The ratification vote was held Thursday at Whitney - which employs 32 teachers - as well as E. C. Drury in Milton, Centre Jules Leger in Ottawa, the Robarts School for the Deaf in London, the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind in Brantford and some correctional institutions.
Coran said teachers will receive a three-per-cent pay hike in September in each of the four years, beginning Sept. 1, 2008.
The contract also calls for some staffing increases and moderate benefit improvements.
Coran said this contract is unique in that it was settled before the existing contract has even expires - it expires Aug. 31, 2008.
"Traditionally the contracts end up in extensive labour negotiations that usually last far beyond the normal expiration of the contract," he said. "There is usually threats of labour disruption and, occasionally, there is in fact some kind of work stoppage. This one was different," said Coran.
He said the agreement demonstrates how successful local collective bargaining should work.
"Our members and the government made this work for the teachers and students in provincial schools. OSSTF now calls on the government to commit to that successful model in all other school boards and settle contracts through local bargaining," Coran said.
