Nuzha Caffoor (left) a grand daughter of late Haj N.H. Caffoor, philanthropist and benefactor of the School for the Deaf, Ratmalana, presented two challenge cups to its Principal, Marie Wijeyaratne (right). Messrs Shivantha Vivekanandan (President, Deaf School Past Pupils’ Association) and Christopher (Vice Principal) look on.

Marie Wijeyaratne said that as she is the patron of the Deaf School Past Pupils’ Association, Ratmalana. She is proud that the association achieved excellent performances under the popular and well known former sports star and distinguished past pupil, Shivantha Vivekanandan who was elected as the president of the association from 2003 todate. The Deaf School Past Pupils’ Association supported many projects for the deaf school.

Shivantha Vivekananda, who is the current chairman, organizing committee, organized the deaf school’s sports activities like netball, cricket and volleyball for both boys and girls in partnership with Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC (the former Caltex Lubricants Lanka, Ltd.) from 2002 to 2010.

Chervon extended the sponsorship thrice owing to Shivantha’s dynamic leadership. She said that Shivantha is the current President, Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Association, as well as Vice Chairman, Asia Deaf Cricket Federation. Shivantha’s role in promoting playing ‘leather-ball cricket’ in division III organized by Sri Lanka Cricket, is a classic example to the sports officials.

She said that they were proud to be associated with the Parent-Teacher Association to help create better prospects for deaf children and also for the International Deaf Day, which would be celebrated all over the world on the last Sunday in the month of September. She thanked the Deaf School Past Pupils’ Association for its fullest support to develop the deaf school and she hoped that the association will go from strength to strength.
