Deaf Santa hears wishes from local students - KTKA.com
For some, the sounds of the season sound like nothing at all.
That is not keeping deaf and hearing-impaired children in Topeka from telling Santa exactly what they want for Christmas.
On Friday, a deaf Santa Claus used sign language to say “ho, ho, ho” to 16 students at Whitson Elementary School.
“Santa is something that is universal for all children,” explained teacher Tina Owsley.
Students like Griffin Ramos understand why this Saint Nick is so special.
“Because he signs like we do,” Ramos said.
“Communication is a great link, and a great barrier sometimes,” said Owsley. “Knowing they can communicate with Santa I think made them all extremely happy.”
It is not this Santa’s first time in this class. The man in the red suit is David Hale. Years ago, he was one of Owsley’s students.
“It shows that I'm still here,” Hale said through an interpreter. “I grew up deaf just like all these other students and its good for them.”
“It made them have more self esteem.”
