AKRON -- Pilot Stephen Hopson of Akron will take his exams today with the goal of becoming the first deaf person in the country to receive an instrument flight rating.
The veteran private and commercial pilot will have to fly with another instrument-rated pilot. The second pilot will relay radio comments from air-traffic controllers.
Two-way radio is required to fly with instruments, but Hopson persuaded the FAA to let him pursue an instrument rating.
Several hundred of the nation's 60,000 active pilots are deaf.
