UGANDA National Association of the Deaf(UNAD) has asked the government to create an environment that will ensure that more deaf children are enrolled in schools.
Using sign language, UNAD’s Information Officer, Mr Joseph Mbulamwana, said it was sad that currently only seven deaf children sit for Primary Living Examinations (PLE) every year.
“They keep on telling us that there are 60,000 deaf children enrolled in schools but how come that only seven children sit for PLE every year. What forces the rest out of school? The government should look for concrete solutions to this problem,” he said.
Briefing journalists on a play by the Silent Theatre, a drama group for deaf persons, Mbulamwana said the country would continue to face poverty ignorance and disease if some segments of the population are denied access to relevant services.
The deaf through the Silent Theatre Project are to present a play titled, “ The Magic Seeds” at the National Theatre on December 15.
The project initiated by UNAD and the Silent Theatre in Sweden in 2002 advocates and lobbies for equal participation and inclusion of deaf people in all aspects of life in society today.
