A deaf Lancashire pensioner has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife.
James Holland, 75, is accused of killing wife Joan, 72, at the couple's home in Wigan.
Mrs Holland's body was found at their address in Severn Drive, Norley Hall, on January 8. A post-mortem examination found that she died of multiple blows to the body.
Holland, who has mobility problems, sat in the witness box at Liverpool Crown Court to enable him to follow the proceedings.
No plea has been entered, although the court indicated that a trial is likely to take place in November.
Holland was bailed until Friday, September 26, when he will formally enter a plea.
