Deaf pensioner could not hear her attackers

This is the bruised face that the family of Diana Hoye saw when they rushed to be with her after the deaf pensioner was knocked from her walking frame and robbed.

The muggers approached Diana, aged 62, from behind in Erdington. She would not have heard them coming and, having difficulty communicating, would have been unable to call for help.

"She was jumped by two lads; they stole £150 from her bag and beat her up terribly," said Diana's shocked cousin, Deborah Gannon, aged 49.

"They could have just knocked her over – the force of them grabbing her bag from her neck pulled her down – but they continued striking a vulnerable person." Diana was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured cheekbone.

The incident happened in Underwood Close, Stockland Green, Erdington, last Saturday afternoon.

Diana's attackers struck a three-minute walk away from her home. She can see the spot from her building.

"It can get very dark and secluded round there," said Deborah.

"I'd be looking for CCTV or extra lighting to catch culprits.

"In this instance, because they came from behind and Diana is deaf, it will be difficult to identify them."

Mrs Gannon praised the police for their sensitivity in dealing with Diana's individual circumstances.

"I believe the police are doing their utmost; they've been wonderful with her."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We are investigating.

"We were called to the scene just after 6pm on Saturday. A 62-year-old woman suffered a suspected broken cheekbone and was taken to hospital.

"Two males wearing dark clothing stole her bag and assaulted her before escaping.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
