Deaf need a caption-capable movie theater in D.M. | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

The deaf community in Des Moines has to travel at least 120 miles to see a captioned movie in the theater. Cedar Falls and Omaha are the closest locations. I have made the drive to Cedar Falls with my deaf girlfriend.

Two technologies are readily available. The rear-window technology is not on the screen and not a disturbance to others. This technology can be found in the $7,000 to $10,000 price range. I would think there would be some sort of grant for this cause.

If Des Moines is trying to be a town of choice, providing services such as this would make us more of an open-arms community. Most people that I have told this to are usually stunned or confused as to why such an easy solution is not provided. We don't wish for every theater screen to have it - just one in town would speak volumes, especially to those who don't hear.

If such technology exists in Des Moines, we do not know of it. I give great thanks to any theater that speaks up on the issue.
