Legalbrief - Deaf mute tells of mother's rape ordeal
A deaf and mute young man told the North Gauteng High Court how his mother held his hand while being raped by one of the robbers who broke into their Faerie Glen townhouse.
According to a Pretoria News report, the woman earlier gave evidence in camera about her ordeal two years ago when Charles Sekwati (21) and alleged rapist Timothy Tumiso allegedly broke into her home. The son, who took the stand, testified with the help of a sign language interpreter. After much prompting he eventually told the court he had seen his mother being raped.
News - Crime & Courts: Mom held son's hand during rape
A deaf and mute young man on Friday described to the Pretoria High Court how his mother held his hand while being raped by one of the robbers who broke into their Faerie Glen townhouse.
The woman earlier gave evidence in camera about her ordeal on August 21, 2008 when Charles Sekwati, 21, and alleged rapist Timothy Tumiso allegedly broke into her home.
The son, who cannot be identified to protect his mother's identity, yesterday took the stand, testifying with the help of a sign language interpreter.
He explained that he woke up when his bedroom light went on.
The young man's hands were tied behind his back before he was taken to his mother's bedroom.
Inside the room, he saw that his mother was also tied up on the bed.
"When I lay on the bed, my mother held my hand," he said.
The State had to prompt him regarding the rape and the young man at first signed he did not see anything. He later explained that he did feel the bed moving and after further prompting, conceded that he saw one of the intruders raping his mother.
The terrified witness said he saw the two intruders in court, but was too afraid to point them out.
Meanwhile a resident of a security complex in Rietfontein, who was on May 30 surprised by intruders, whom the State claimed included Sekwati, testified how his three-year-old son had to untie the family afterwards.
Meyer Jooste was working in the early hours of May 30, 2008 when he was surprised by three robbers who tied him, his wife and daughter up before ransacking the house.
When the robbers left, the boy, who had been sleeping, untied them.
The case is proceeding.
