Deaf mute fails freedom bid - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A deaf mute who was judged unfit to stand trial for killing a man has been ordered to stay in supervised care to protect himself and the public.

Roland Ebatarintja, 30, contracted meningitis when he was three and cannot hear or speak as a result.

The Northern Territory Supreme Court placed Ebatarintja under the 24 hour watch of the health department for five years in 2004, after it was decided he was unfit to stand trial on charges he stabbed two women.

Ebatarintja was also found unfit to face charges of fatally stabbing a man in 1995.

Earlier this year, he spent time in jail for running away from his carers and smoking cannabis.

Today his lawyer told the court he wanted to be free.

But Justice Riley said both the public and Ebatarintja were at serious risk if he was released from supervision.

He extended supervision for another 12 months.
