A deaf mute who allegedly chopped his former female companion at their workplace has been charged with attempted murder.
The 34-year-old man of Guaico reportedly got into a heated "quarrel" with his former common law wife on Thursday morning over custody of a child they have together.
The former couple both work at Bisram's Meat Shop in Sangre Grande.
The quarrel is said to have escalated shortly after 8 a.m.
The man reportedly began chopping the woman, said to be a 26-year-old Guyanese citizen about her head, arms and fingers.
She collapsed in a pool of blood at the meat shop.
The man fled.
The woman was rushed to the Sangre Grande District Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.
She was later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where she is said to be in critical but stable condition.
Sangre Grande CID officers later held the suspect at his home and seized a cutlass believed to have been the weapon used.
The man was charged on Friday by Corporal Rameshwar Gopaul of the Sangre Grande CID.
He will appear before the district magistrate tomorrow.
