Deaf mum 'an inspiration' - Hemelhempstead Today

A mum from Hemel Hempstead has become the first deaf woman to win a prestigious Woman of the Future award.
Sabina Iqbal, the founder of Deaf Parenting UK, took home the top gong in the voluntary category on Thursday (November 6).

The awards judges said Sabina, 32, had transformed the provision of services for deaf parents, adding: "Sabina is someone who spotted a gap in service provision and had the motivation to plug it, overcoming numerous barriers to do so.

"We have every confidence that she will go on to do the same overseas.

"She has created a truly sustainable, world-class organisation in the voluntary field."

Deaf Parenting UK was founded six years ago and is the first organisation of its kind.

Sabina collected her award at a ceremony at London Marriott Grosvenor Square that celebrated the UK's most inspirational women under 35.

A spokesman for Deaf Parenting UK said: "We are so proud of Sabina. She is an excellent role model and an inspiration to many women across the
UK and the world.

"Her achievements are amazing, especially in her voluntary capacity.

"She enables deaf parents to have a voice in society and share models of good practice."

The charity's work is widely recognised as invaluable to the deaf community, it has recently been shortlisted for The Guardian's public services awards and took home a TalkTalk Innovation in the Community gong at a ceremony in the House of Lords on Wednesday, November 5.
